The Badger State Trail begins at Madison with a connection to the Capital City Trail, and extends 40 miles south to the Illinois border. Along the way there is great sightseeing, plus lodging and dining options in the Green County communities of New Glarus, Belleville, Monticello, and Monroe.
At the Illinois border, the Badger trail connects to the Jane Addams Trail and continues to Freeport, Illinois. Visit the Freeport/Stephenson County Convention and Visitor Bureau website for more information on continuing your adventure into Illinois.
History of the Stewart Tunnel, by Kim Tschudy
“Running from the state capital of Madison south to the Illinois border, the 40-mile route could well become the most popular of Wisconsin's 32 rails-to-trails conversions. It will skirt farm fields and visit small towns and wind amid the scenic hills and valleys that remain largely untouched by the urban sprawl that has gobbled much of the state's rural countryside.”

Sugar River State Trail
The Sugar River State Trail was one of the first rails-to-trails conversions in Wisconsin. The scenic trail winds its way 23 miles (39 kilometers) through picturesque countryside. Four Green County communities are linked by the trail: New Glarus (Trail Headquarters), Monticello, Albany and Brodhead. A trail pass is necessary for biking and can be purchased at Trail Headquarters located in the historic train depot in New Glarus or a variety of locations in Brodhead, Albany, and Monticello.
